Notes

Petitioners ask that surveyed boundaries be registered by all persons making claim to public lands; the Assembly addressed some of their concerns in two acts passed in this session: "An act for confirming certain titles to lands," and "An act to amend an act, entitled. 'An act for surveying lands given by law to officers and soldiers on continental and state establish-ments,' and for other purposes" (Chaps. XVI & XXVII of Acts of December 1817 Assembly). Only known copy, held in the state archives at the Library of Virginia, lacks colophon; sheet is dated December 5, 1817, in manuscript, the date it was received by the House of Delegates; two such petitions were received from Cabell and Lewis Counties that day, with a third from Kanawha County entered on December 12th; the locus of requests indicates this originated from a press in western Virginia (Wheeling, Clarksburg, or Morgantown); yet a definitive attribution is impracticable without further evidence, so the indeterminacy here.
