Notes
Sheet is card-sized without colophon; Jane Atkinson Jones (1762-1816) was the wife of Gen. Joseph Jones (1749-1824), one of the principal Republican leaders in the Petersburg area; she died at their Cedar Grove estate in Dinwiddie County on the date noted herein; thus this ticket certainly issued from a press in Petersburg, probably the primary Republican one of Edward Pescud, long a friend and ally of the Jones family; however, the possibility that this item issued from another press there cannot be excluded, so the indeterminacy here. Shaw & Shoemaker, as well as Hummel, suggest a Richmond origin for this title, apparently not knowing of the social prominence of someone with so common a name as Jane Jones, nor that of an estate named Cedar Grove.
