Notes
This library was formed as a social institution in 1794, and incorporated by act of Assembly in January 1799 (Chap. XLIV of Acts of December 1798 Assembly); contents here include text of the act [p. 3-4], the by-laws of the company [p. 5-8], a list of 137 members of the Alexandria Library Company [p. 9-10], and the catalogue itself [all after p. 10]; only known copy, held by the Library of Congress, has loss of all pages after p. 46; both format and text suggest only two pages have been lost, as the last surviving entries are "Appendix" of the magazines and pamphlets in the library's collection; that shortened list reports 1027 titles in all. Evidently compiled by James Kennedy, the secretary and librarian of the society, who signed the by-laws [p. 8]; he became a bookseller as a result of his association to the library; besides Kennedy, the list of members includes four other Virginia publishers: James Muir. Ferdinando Fairfax, Nathaniel Rounsavell, and Samuel Snowden.
