Notes

Sheet lacks colophon; most authorities assign an 1814 date and a Washington origin to this item, based on date of speech; Hummel assigned it to an unnamed Virginia press in 1814. John Clopton was a Republican representing congressional district that included Richmond; it was his usual practice to publish letters to constituents through a Richmond press of similar political perspective; so this sheet likely issued from the partisan press of Thomas Ritchie & Daniel Trueheart, but the possibility that it originated at another press, such as that of the fading Virginia Argus, cannot be discounted, so the indeterminacy here.
