Notes

Described by Bishop Meade as "a man of gigantic stature, stentorian lungs, and forbidding countenance," Low was a popular preacher; yet at this time, he was embroiled in a heated controversy over his marital status, living with one woman in Virginia while still married to another in New York; Lynch appears here to be part of an unsuccessful attempt to restore Low's reputation; the minister resigned his Fredericksburg pulpit later in the year.
