1808.028: Prospectus for The Virginian Orator.
Full Title: The Virginian Orator, being a variety of original and selected poems, orations … to improve American youth in the …useful arts of eloquence and gesture. By Thomas E. Birch.
Author: Birch, Thomas Erskine (1763-1821).
Place Issued: Richmond
Issuing Press: Samuel Pleasants
Description: 1 sheet [1 pg.]; 10 cm. x 18 cm. (broadside).
Birch was an English émigré, who fled Britain during the Revolutionary War, made his way to Virginia, and became a noted educator and Methodist minister in Wythe County; as text here notes, his proposed publication was designed to advance school-children's oratorical skills. Sheet lacks colophon; as Samuel Pleasants printed the finished work for Birch, this subscriber circular was most likely printed by him as well, so the attribution here.
