Notes
Title page lacks authorial credit; Wirt later confirmed these letters were written by him; in 1803, he was a lawyer in Richmond and Norfolk; Wirt later served as U.S. Attorney General (1817-29); text is a series of sketches, often satiric, of contemporary Virginia figures. First edition was published using "the newspaper type from which it was originally printed" in the Virginia Argus (1803.031). The second edition, printed later that same year (1803.038), was completely reset in a single column octavo format; this third edition reorganized the text once again into a less-expensive duodecimo format.
