Notes
Curran was prosecuting a complaint against the town major of Dublin for false imprisonment of a citizen; while the defendant was convicted of violating the plaintiff's civil rights, he was fined only ₤150 for his actions; the unnamed editor of this edition of Curran's description of the event wrote that he was publishing the speech for its commentary on the attitudes of "friends of strong Government" (i.e. Federalists), so "an ample apology" for Republicanism.
