John Mercer was a son of General Hugh Mercer, the close friend of Washington who died at the Battle of Princeton in 1777; the son became an attorney in Fredericksburg, served in the House of Delegates, and acted as Monroe's private secretary during the Louisiana Purchase negotiations; ill health forced his retirement from public life in 1806.
