Notes

Herein, James Mercer offers for sale lands seized from his Loyalist brother George, who died in London in April 1784; an act of Assembly allowed the sale of these lands by James, his brother's administrator in Virginia, to settle the estate's outstanding debts. See Chap. LXXVIII of the Acts of October 1786 in Hening's Statutes (XII:365-369): "An act for vesting in James Mercer, esq; certain lands whereof George Mercer died seized."
