John C. Bowyer (1803-80) acquired the Virginian in mid-September 1843 with approbation of local Democratic party leaders; he continued in that role until it became clear that the party would lose the 1848 presidential election; he then sold the weekly paper to Edward C. Bruce (1825-1900), in combination with Charlestown lawyers J. W. Beller (1820-77) and A.J. O'Bannon (1815-60).
