Alexandria 01-01: The Virginia Journal and Alexandria Advertiser

Starting Date: February 5, 1784

Ending Date: July 4, 1789

Publication Frequency: Weekly

Proprietors: George Richards & Co.

Notes

First new weekly issued in Virginia after the Revolutionary War outside of Richmond. Richards published the paper first with the support of Baltimore printer and publisher William Goddard (ca, 1784-86), and then with Alexandria land-agent Thomas Bond (ca. 1787-89). The paper experienced a brief three week suspension following the unexpected death of Richards in July 1789, during which time Bond joined with Samuel Hanson, a local forwarding agent, to create the firm that then published the successor to this title.
