Title is an unique imprint; Davis was one of four adolescent sons of prominent Richmonders who together published this self-made English grammar; son of Augustine Davis, publisher of the Virginia Patriot, Davis is listed as the printer with Edward Carrington Marshall (1805-1882), youngest son of Chief Justice John Marshall; George Daniel Fisher (1804-1891), son of exchange merchant George Fisher, who was a brother-in-law of Justice Marshall; and Robert Macmurdo (d. 1836), son of Fisher's former partner Charles Macmurdo, as publishers of this work; each of Davis's peers here went on to lives as leading lawyers in Virginia, while Davis retired from the printing trade for a mercantile life.
