Notes

A series of five letters published in the Richmond Enquirer after the passage of act creating the University of Virginia (Chap. XI of Acts of December 1817 Assembly; law appropriated monies from the state's Literary Fund for that purpose, but unnamed author (calling himself Henry) here argued for greater funding for the university than those monies allowed. Only known copy, held by the Virginia Historical Society, lacks imprint; as correspondence appeared originally in the Richmond Enquirer, it is more than likely that this title was issued from that office as well; hence the attribution here.
