The Richmond Lancastrian (or Lancasterian) School was incorporated by Act of Assembly on February 22, 1816, with a board of trustees that included Thomas Ritchie, newspaper editor Louis Hue Girardin, and evangelical journalist John Holt Rice, among others; Ritchie had been advocating this "monitorial system" of education in his Richmond Enquirer since early 1809.
