1816.130: Address of Thomas M. Nelson to Voters of 18th Congressional District.

Published: 1816

Full Title: Mecklenburg, August 1, 1816. To the freeholders of the Congressional District of Brunswick, Lunenburg and Mecklenburg. The unfortunate death of our respected representative (Mr. [Thomas] Gholson) makes a fall election in this district necessary ... In making a tender of my services to represent you in the Congress ... Thomas M. Nelson.

Author: Nelson, Thomas Maduit (1782-1853).

Place Issued: Virginia

Issuing Press: Uncertain

Description: 1 sheet [1 pg.]; 22 cm. x 34 cm. (broadside).

Thomas Gholson, Jr. had been reelected to his seat in Congress during the elections of spring 1816; however, he died on July 4th, forcing a special election for his successor that fall; the Republican Nelson herein offered himself in opposition to the Federalist candidate, James J. Harrison; Nelson defeated Harrison (625-512) and served this district in Congress until March 1819, after he declined reelection in order to relocate to Tennessee. Only known copy is held in the special collections of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; that sheet lacks colophon; determining the issuing press is impracticable, as the district is effectively equidistant from Petersburg and Lynchburg where Republican printers were then conducting presses; hence, the indeterminacy here.
