Imprint states: "Printed and sold by Samuel Pleasants, for William F. Gray, Fredericksburg." In 1804, Bates began publishing his calculations (or ephemerides) through Richmond printer Samuel Pleasants; in 1807, he joined in a joint publishing project with Pleasants's protégé Seaton Grantland that produced multiple variants of a single almanac for booksellers in all of Virginia's fall-line towns (Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Petersburg), along with a distinct Pleasants edition; their joint effort continued until Grantland relocated to Georgia in mid-1809. That multi-variant approach was restarted in the fall of 1811 (for 1812 edition) with Bates forging a new arrangement with Pleasants as both printer and seller in Richmond (1811.041), and with Robert Gray in Alexandria (1811.042), William F. Gray in Fredericksburg (this item), and John Somervell in Petersburg (1811.044) as the named booksellers. The four variants of the Virginia Almanack for 1812 are essentially typographically identical, as had been the preceding editions; the small variations in each are found in the changes to the title-page imprint that identifies that variant's retailer, and in differing advertisements for that retailer found on the last printed page [p. 36].
