Notes
Burk, the noted Republican polemicist, returned to play-writing with a political message – his original occupation when he arrived in America – while still drafting the fourth volume of his well-known History of Virginia. This new play drew on a novel by William Godwin, the early English socialist, (St. Leon: A Tale of the Sixteenth Century), which was apparently popular in Virginia, as evinced by the three American editions published in Alexandria in 1801-02.
