Notes

Banks wrote to the voters of the 11th Virginia Congressional district opposing the candidacy of Carter Braxton Jr. (1765-1809) as successor to the retiring Anthony New; the son of the like-named signer of the Declaration of Independence, Braxton was the Federalist running against James M. Garnett, the Republican candidate; Garnett won this election handily. Sheet lacks colophon; by March 1804, there was only one Republican press still operating in Fredericksburg, the nearest such press to the district, conducted by Samuel Chiles and Isham Burch, hence the attribution here.
