This oration articulated the themes behind Burk's forthcoming The History of Virginia, From its First Settlement to the Present Day (1804-16); the first volume that work issued from the Petersburg press of John Dickson & Edward Pescud in October 1804, with second volume appearing in mid-1806 and the third in late 1806 from that same press; the series was left uncompleted by Burk's death in a duel in April 1808.
