Full Title: We the subscribers, do hereby promise and oblige ourselves, our heirs, executors, or administrators, to pay, or cause to be paid, unto the trustees of the Winchester Academy, the several sums of money annexed to our several names ...
Author: Winchester Academy
Place Issued: Winchester
Issuing Press: Uncertain
Description: 1 sheet [1 pg.]; 31 cm. x 19 cm. (broadside).
Dated February 1790 and signed in print by John Smith, Robert Macky, Rawleigh Cole, Robert White Jr., J. Peyton, Edward Smith, John Kean, Cornelius Baldwin, Joseph Tidball, John H. Norton; each subscriber pledged either ₤10 or ₤20 the new venture. Sheet lacks printer credit; with three presses operating in Winchester in early 1790 – those of Bowen & Willcocks, Mathias Bartgis, and Nathaniel Willis – this sheet could have been issued by any one of them; Richard Bowen was a schoolmaster in his own right, and so his press is the most likely publisher, but no evidence identifying a specific printer is known.
